You've watched Jeff Daniels as a talented actor in films like TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO, ARACHNOPHOBIA, DUMB & DUMBER, FLY AWAY HOME and SPEED to name a few. FYI, all concert proceeds go to his not-for-profit Michigan-based Purple Rose Theatre. Daniels says, "I've been writing songs for thirty years...all of them had a time and place that marked some moment in my life. If you really want to get to know me, you'd find me in there." ROSE THORNTON: THE HOUSES THAT SEARS BUILT Lecture & Book Signing
Location: "The Houses that Sears Built," has been relocated to the Hilton Garden Inn and Suffolk Conference Center due to an early morning fire at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts.

Rose Thornton has spent years traveling the country retracing the roots of a treasured form of Americana-the Sears catalog homes. After intensive study and research, Thornton has evolved into a renowned expert on Sears homes and other kit home collections. Having authored four popular books about the kit homes, including the 2004 reprint of The Houses that Sears Built, Thornton has expanded her search of Sears homes to Suffolk. To discuss her housing scavenger hunt, Thornton will give a lecture at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 12, at the Speight Room inside of the Hilton Garden Inn and Suffolk Conference Center. Free and open to the public, Thornton's lecture will include her journey and passion for discovering kit homes. To Thornton, "Sears homes make the past come alive. The past that is represented within the brittle and browned pages of an old catalog comes alive when you can walk into those pages-physically walk-into a living room that is pictured in a 1924 Sears Modern Homes catalog." Reservations may be made by calling (757) 514-4130. Autographed copies of Thornton's publications will be available for purchase following the lecture.

"Between 1908-1940, more than 75,000 Sears homes were built. Sears kit homes contained 30,000 pieces, including 750 pounds of nails, 27 gallons of paint and a 75-page instruction book. Sears estimated that the average carpenter would charge $450 to assemble those 30,000 pieces of house. The painter's fee: $34.50. Sears estimated that other skilled labor would cost $1 an hour. Prices for these build-it-yourself kit houses ranged from $600 to $6,000," according to Thornton.
