DIXIE HUMMINGBIRDS, MARIE KNIGHT AND THE SUFFOLK ALL CITY GOSPEL CHOIR
Location:
Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, 110 W. Finney Avenue
How many singing groups reach their 75th anniversary? Better yet, how many can celebrate it with a cut on a chart-climbing soundtrack and a new album that shows them at their soul-stirring best? The Dixie Hummingbirds is an influential American gospel music group of talented singers that have spanned many styles from 1920s jubilee quartet, the 40's & 50's hard gospel style of Gospel's golden age, to the eclectic songs of today. The Hummingbirds influenced artists like James Brown & sang back-up on Paul Simon's LOVE ME LIKE A ROCK. Opening for the Hummingbirds is Marie Knight, a fine gospel singer with a ringing, signifying voice. Her bounteous contralto is as strong and sure as ever. And as a special treat, our own 60 member group, the Suffolk Youth Gospel Choir, will perform! $45, $35, $30. 8:00 p.m. (757) 923-0003.

KRISTA DETOR, Singer/Songwriter, in Concert
Location:
Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, 110 W. Finney Avenue
This Indiana based singer-songwriter performs on piano, unconstrained by the whole lounge singer effect. Her wonderful voice is smoky and sultry. Like a voyeur peeking into our relationships, homes and the dark night of our souls, Detor will leave the truth bundled at our doorstep & ring the bell. Rolling Stone said, "Krista Detor would be good on every stage in the world." $30 Adult, $15 Student. 8:00 p.m. (757) 923-0003.
