Suffolk Chili Fest

Bennett’s Creek Park
Spend the day sampling the best chili and beer combinations around! Live music and family fun. Sponsored by the Sertoma Club. All proceeds will go to the Bennett’s Creek SERTOMA and to the SERTOMA in Suffolk Clubs to benefit local children with speech and hearing impairments, SERTOMA’s international philanthropy, with additional support going to the Reading Enriches All Children (REACH) Programs in Suffolk. Tickets required and available in advance or at the door. Fields and Forests, Waterways and Wetlands Exhibit
Location:
Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts SCCA), 110 West Finney Avenue
In partnership with the National Audubon Society, the SCCA galleries will feature fine prints of American master artist John Audubon. Called “the Founding Father of American Art,” Audubon created a massive body of work that included portraits of every bird then known in the United States. Complementing the extraordinary Audubon images will be an extensive local collection of waterfowl decoys. All Audubon prints will be offered for sale, with the proceeds jointly benefiting the SCCA and the National Audubon Society. (This exhibit is presented by the SCCA and the Suffolk Museum including The Decoy Collection of Tommy O’Connor and paintings by Paul Fisher.) Love Letters Starring Barbara Eden & Hal Linden

Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, 110 W. Finney Ave.
It will be a night to remember as two of the best loved actors of our time perform the poignant, Pulitzer Prize winning play that eavesdrops on a 50-year correspondence that will bring out the romantic in us all. Treat yourself and someone you love to one of theater’s most moving, beautifully written plays. 8pm. $30/$45/$60.

Historic Garden Day in Suffolk
Location:
Homes and Gardens in North Suffolk
North Suffolk, with its magnificent waterways and golf communities, serves as the backdrop for this year’s “Tees and Tides” tour. The homes feature breathtaking views of the confluence of the James and Nansemond Rivers, along with an array of designs, styles and landscaping. $30, single-site admission $10; children 11 and younger free of charge. Advance tickets $25 on or before April 9. For advance tickets, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to Mrs. Charles Broadwater (address above) with your check made payable to The Nansemond River Garden Club, or to Mrs. A.P. McLean (address above) with your check made payable to The Elizabeth River Garden Club. Tickets may also be purchased in advance with credit card by accessing www.VAGardenweek.org. Tickets will be available at each house on the day of the tour at full price. Children younger than age 17 must be accompanied by an adult.

The 4th Annual Art Show at Governor’s Pointe
Location:
Shoppes on the Village Green, off of Rte. 17 in North Suffolk
2009 marks the third year for the Art Show at Governor’s Pointe, a popular outdoor juried show that features a variety of artists and entertainment. Located in Northern Suffolk at Governor’s Pointe, the Shoppes are situated adjacent to Smithfield Gardens and feature a variety of boutiques and services. Free and open to the public. 10am-4pm.

The Hudson Vagabond Puppets: The Silly Jellyfish
Location:
Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, 110 W. Finney Ave.
At the bottom of the ocean lies a world teeming with life! Giant puppets will portray the story of a discontented sea dragon, A Blue Crab, an Octopus, a Great White Shark, and a 40 foot long Blue Whale in this story about a Jellyfish without an identity of his own.

Sojourner Truth: I Sell the Shadow

Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, 110 W. Finney Ave.
Over 100 years ago, the largest funeral procession in America followed the death of a slave. Kim Russell will portray this pivotal figure in American history. Presented in the tradition of Chautauqua, the audience will listen to this voice from the past as well as ask Sojourner questions about her life and times as a slave, her work as a 19th century feminist, her courtroom battles and her speech “Ain’t I a Woman”. Portrayed by Humanities Scholar Kim Russell. 3 pm. $15/$20.

An Evening with Pam Tillis
