"LIFE AFTER WILDFIRE"
Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge Narrated Bus Tour
Location:
Tour departs from the Suffolk Visitor Center, 321 N. Main Street
Nothing ravages a landscape like fire. Witness the aftermath of the 2008 wildfire which swept through the Great Dismal Swamp, burning through acres of forest and displacing wildlife. Discover the rebirth of the Great Dismal with a half-day narrated bus tour.  Foreboding as its name may be, the Great Dismal is one of few remaining American wildernesses. The northern limit of range for many wild creatures, it is a haven for black bear, bobcat, and river otter. With unique habitats and extraordinary cypresses emerging from Lake Drummond, whose waters are stained amber with tannic acid, the Swamp provides excellent hiking, biking, and wildlife observation opportunities. The Great Dismal is an official site of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program. Space is limited and reservations are required. Tours depart from the Suffolk Visitor Center. Tours scheduled Thursdays and Saturdays. Custom group tours available. Bus boards at 9:15am, tour departs at 9:30am. Cost per person: $10 adults; $8 seniors 60+ and kids 3-12. Call (757) 514-4130 or 866-SEE-SUFK toll free for more information.
