Enjoy "VIVID", new works in art and jewelry by Sandy Lupton. The one-woman show will be on display February 1-29, 2012. The artist's reception is scheduled for Saturday, February 11, from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. "Vivid is a celebration of my 50th year on the planet," said Sandy Lupton. "The show will have a carnival atmosphere." "Lupton's mixed media pieces are a perfect balance of humor and sentiment presented in vibrant color and fanciful design," said Leigh Anne Chambers, Executive Director of Rawls Museum Arts.

Sandy has exhibited in numerous shows throughout Virginia including the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, The Ellipse Gallery, Shooting Star Gallery, The Suffolk Art Gallery and the Rawls Museum Arts. Her work has been featured in several magazines including Somerset Studio and Cloth/Paper/Scissors, and in books including Exhibition 36: Mixed Media Demonstrations + Explorations, 500 Handmade Dolls: Modern Explorations of the Human Form, and Material Visions. Sandy works full time as a graphic designer for The Virginian-Pilot and works part time as education specialist for the Rawls Museum Arts. She also teaches mixed media and jewelry classes at Rawls Museum Arts and The Suffolk Art Gallery.

Suffolk Tourism is partnering with the Early Childhood Education Center and the Suffolk Art Gallery to celebrate Groundhog Day at the Suffolk Visitor Center Pavilion. This free kid-focused event will include a petting zoo by The Teeny Tiny Farm, Groundhog Day crafts, Playdoh&Reg; and blocks stations, as well as storytelling. Attendees are encouraged to bundle up for the event, however outdoor heaters will be provided. Families and pre-school groups are welcome to provide their own snacks.

The Big Tent Cabaret Road Show! is an enchanted performance piece featuring a variety of puppet vignettes in a wide gamut of puppetry styles, multiple mask manipulations, trunk puppet surprises, shadows, stories, and giant puppets all set to live music! The shows' finale is "LUMANITY" where light meets the human form with wonder and magic being the result.

Inspired by the original idea of Paperhand's dear friend Kevin Brock, Paperhand has choreographed a beautiful movement piece that is sure to thrill and inspire audiences of all ages. Don't miss this latest super-fun performance by your friendly neighborhood puppeteers. It's fun for the whole family. Paperhand Puppet Intervention is dedicated to bringing many styles of puppetry and artistic expression to the world. These styles include: Giant puppets, masks, stilt dancing, rod puppets, shadows or silhouettes, and anything else they might make at any time. These amazing puppeteers create experiences that are a synthesis of many art forms including (but not limited to): sculpting, painting, music, dance, improvisation, costume/set design and theater. Their art is wondrous, joyful and profound.

Suffolk Humane Society and St.Paul's Episcopal Church have partenered to bring the BARKS (Books and Reading for Kids in Suffolk) Program to Suffolk children. The program allows children to read one on one to a therapy dog and their handler in a non-threatening environment and utilizes therapy dogs because they are non-judgmental listeners. Your child will feel confident while reading to a furry friend! In addition to reading, there will be treats for the children and coffee & donuts will also be available. Probably not really "lousy", but on a winter walk one never knows what will be waiting around the bend. We do know the bugs will be gone, as well as the foliage, leaving the wildlife more exposed to your prying eyes. Walk takes approximately 1 1/2 hours and covers 1 mile of trail. Reservations can be made by contacting the Refuge Office.
